I first discovered AGF a while back when a friend showed me this video of a dance troupe from Israel she had just seen perform. I fell inlove with the music but it wasn’t until years later, recently when I was cooking for a friend, that we found ourselves watching this video once again, and we decided to look it up to see who was responsible for this amazing sound. Which lead me to writing this introduction to who AGF is.
Antye Greie aka AGF is a vocalist, musician, producer, and artist. She was born and rasied in East Germany but now resides with her daughter and partner in Hailuoto, Finland. Early on in her life she developed an interest for music, poetry and philosophy- which influenced how she approached music, incorporating overlapping speech with electronic music, eventually leading into 2004 when AGF was given the Ars Electronica Award of Distinction in Digital Music. In 2005 she created a sound installation and score for Ohad Naharin’s Shalosh (Three) performed by the Batsheva Dance Company. The dancing and music blend together using multi-layered elements with a confident meloncholy.
Since moving to Finland she started a program called the Hailuoto Sound Choir . The choir is part of the Hai Art project, and meets once a week to practice pieces composed by Antye Greie in collaboration with Iiris Poukkanen, which involve humming and buzzing, clicking, clucking, and spoken word.
AGF has also created visuals for Vladislav Delay’s live set used on their Japan tour last autumn, who she also regularly collaborates musically with.
