Thomas Franzman, most well known as Zip, was born in Germany during the seventies. This was before digital format and at the age of eight, Franzmann had already dipped into the world of vinyl. As he acquired years, he also acquired everything in music from progressive leading to punk and then rock. His knowledge was extensive and his collection of vinyl now reflected three decades of tireless discovery.
As Franzmann collected the music of others, he began producing his own sounds starting out as the lead singer in a synth pop band, Second Voice. He released numerous EPs and two albums on Hyperium Records before joining the Frankfurt-based EBM project, Bigod 20, again as the singer in 1992. The band received a generous dose of attention that has sustained a healthy fanbase still today, 7 years since the split. After the band finished, Franzmann and his old bandmate, Markus Nikolai, began to create a more bass heavy project called, Loraine Comfort, which would eventually lead to the modern underground label that you all know as, Perlon.
Even with one of the most progressive electronic music labels, Franzmann prefers minimal publicity, being one to not overly promote, but rather focus on his primary intention, bringing in some of the finest electronic musicians from across the globe. The label has worked with such likes as Baby Ford, San Proper, STL, Shackleton, Sammy Dee (Franzmann’s regular production partner in Pantytec), Margaret Dygas and of course Ricardo Villalobos.
