The evening was off to a shit start between not feeling so well and everyone, one by one flaking on coming out with me tonight. I laid down and put on some of this meditation music that I listen to and zoned out for an hour, by 12:30, still pissed off, but a little less so, I said ‘fuck it’, I’m outta here. I grabbed my ID, some cash and smokes, got in the hooptie and took off for downtown LA, just a 10 minute drive from my place. Lying somewhere in the industrial district, after searching for several blocks I finally rolled up on a parking spot, grabbed it and walked to the address that was emailed to me on the night of. By the time I reached the doors I could hear the bass pounding and once I walked through the doors I pretty much got confirmation that this was exactly where I needed to be… Smacked in the face with techno, after feeling the way I did all night, I wanted something nasty and hard. The sound system was set with ample Funcktion 1 speakers that made the hair on my arms bounce, the space was super grimy street, packed with people who were feeling the shit, these people came to hear techno. Only thing was the pushing here was on another level, even when Europeans are fucked up, there’s a little more courtesy and connection when brushing up on one another…. but for the most part it didn’t matter cause the guys playing live, Raiz were killin’ it. I made my way swiftly to the front speakers where I held my head down, closed my eyes and let the night take over. I danced, letting off major steam, by myself in the middle of everyone. By 2am Ben Klock, beginning his set with a gradual intro that dropped into continued boom of sound, the native of Berlin took over with a fury. This was a highlight for me as I had been wanting to experience Ben Klock live for sometime. At one point the guy next to me offered me his bottle of water, I politely declined as he told me that I looked like I “was having a good time”… I thought to myself, well that’s a good thing considering I got there pissed and telling the world to fuck off. That’s what a good party can do, it can turn your night around, it can fill you up with a new sense of the world, it ain’t no life changer, but it’s valid and necessary to keep you going sometimes. I just want to thank the guys over at DROID for a night of amazing music, they definitely know how to throw a party.
Below and above are some low quality videos on youtube from the March 9th party I attended:
