Red Bull Music Academy presents the high priest of Detroit house, Theo Parrish, alongside last year’s Academy graduate Jolly Mare in Civitanova Marche’s Magga Club on April 4th.
“The love of music should be the driving force for any producer, performer or DJ.” Theo Parrish is in this game for all the right reasons. The Chicago-raised Detroit resident is the legitimate heir and conscience of a DJ school that stems from ancestors like Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles and Andre Hatchett, radio shows on WBMX and clubs like the Music Box. As anyone who has experienced a Theo Parrish set can testify, the work of this consummate architect of sound envelopes the listener, and transmits new perspectives on club sonics. Maltreating the EQs, playing vinyl like a self-contained, vamped instrument, fusing soul, jazz, house and disco into one capacious ardent ball is all part of Theo’s musical expression. He can fuse the rhythmic, disco-based pulse of Chicago house with the modernist motoric soul of Detroit techno, while at the same time pointing to a lineage in African-American music that runs directly from Sun Ra to his very own Sound Signature label.
Support on the night will come from New York 2013 graduate, RBMA Fuoriclasse cohort and mellow boogie master Jolly Mare. His turntablist skills and endless bedroom practicing led him to win the 2010 IDA DJ Championships, and crate digging is truly a daily operation for this self-confessed vinyl addict. In recent years he has moved into the realm of production, creating slow boogie jams that emanate soulful, scientific authenticity.
