Feature: The American Brothers di Sandro Mele

– podcast made by Ennio Colaci

(Translated from Italian to English)

The American brothers show is a bit ‘the continuation of a journey to the world of work, the relationship between factory workers and “master.” Story of the Fiat is the main theme of this exhibition and Sandro tells the story of what happened to the Italian Fiat, through glimpses and pieces of a structure in crisis and denouncing difficulties and limitations that affect the world of work. Marchionne wants to emphasize the model, that is what the metalworkers are experiencing , so what’s the problem worker. Sandro tells what is the history of the workers in fiat. If you dissect this exhibition, there are key issues. The model Marchionne becomes the metaphor of the factory today, and work. The art of Sandro is not about decoration of the environment, but also become part of the world trying to figure it out. The role is not to witness but to become an active role in society. We used various means such as drawing, video and photography, and put them together in an organic way, where they are presented as a unitary structure. Being inside a work of art is something else, it is not to simply speak of work as everyone has always done, but also using the art brings a certain intimacy to this story. Ennio Colaci, wanted to attach to this show, his podcast, to give you more depth and above all give a different look to this show, so bringing the sounds of what Sandro has developed within his show, then taking it through a different documentation. The podcast Ennio Colaci recalls the industrial sounds that bind perfectly to the concept of this exhibition. – by Luca

Questions and Answers with Ennio Colaci-

How did this podcast come about?

The podcast was built in digital audio with logic with instead of the using the principle of individual tracks, each sound blends into the next representing a specific portion of a video in our exhibition also created by the American Brothers. In this triple track recording, the basis of sound was made at the industrial plant Fiat of Pomigliano as to honor the established industrial tones and rhythms that have assisted in developing the Detroit techno music, I wanted you to experience the origin of that industrial reality.

What kind of projects are you pursuing?

I’ve always tried to cross as many paths as possible with producing. I’ve been collaborating with Sandro for about 15 years and I have produced music for other artists, including Fabio Mauri, a known exponent of Italian pop art who died a few years ago. Very recently I made a couple of tracks that have become part of the soundtrack for a movie that will be released soon. Over the years I have done music for films, theater and dance but my main activity remains producing dance music, trying to continue to make records and have fun while doing it.

What position do you put yourself in the music world?

I’m someone who plays and produces because he is passionate since childhood, for this reason I try not to dwell on producing in a single genre, I like to change, grow and explore. I have no borders, I’m just trying to do my job with honesty and passion, expression that comes in a natural way.

What is the value of art for you?

There are many forms of art and sometimes none are remotely similar to one another and so it is difficult to generalize the value of it. In the case of my collaboration with Sandro for example, it has immense value for the social problems being addressed through the beauty of this work. This is very important because it is an alternative look to the news media commentary. In many cases art predicts the future by influencing decisively on political and social choices, other times it is of pure and immense emotional value as with music or movies.
